Small business digital marketing: how do you promote your business online?
You can help customers find you online without a big advertising budget. Build the foundations first, then use a few channels regularly and measure them; that's enough.
In short
- For a small business, digital marketing comes down to three jobs: being found (Google and maps), earning trust (website, reviews, content) and keeping in touch with customers (email, WhatsApp, social media).
- Before spending money on ads, you should have a website, a complete Google Business Profile and measurement tools (Search Console, Analytics).
- For local businesses the most efficient channels are usually Google Business Profile, local SEO, customer reviews and small-budget ads targeted by location.
- Under Law No. 6563, prior consent must be obtained from recipients for commercial email, SMS and WhatsApp messages.
- Measure each channel for a few weeks; drop the channel that brings no enquiries and grow the one that does.
You're a well-known business in your neighbourhood. Your customers are happy and new ones come through recommendations. But most newcomers now look online first: they search on Google, read reviews on the map, glance at Instagram. If you're not there, or look incomplete, they pass you by.
Small business digital marketing isn't just big-budget campaigns. Most of the time it's about appearing in the right place with the right information, earning the customer's trust and keeping in touch. Much of this is free.
In this article we give an honest, workable answer to "how do I promote my business online": the foundations to build first, the channels and their costs, local advertising options, consent rules and a 90-day starter plan.
Part 1 · Definition What does digital marketing mean for a small business?
Digital marketing is promoting your business and winning customers through online channels. For a small business it can be reduced to three jobs:
| Job | Question | Channels |
|---|---|---|
| Being found | When customers search for me or my service, do they find me? | Google Search, Google Maps, Google Business Profile, ads |
| Earning trust | Does the person who finds me get enough information and confidence to choose me? | Website, customer reviews, photos, content |
| Keeping in touch | Does a customer who came once come back, and recommend me? | Email newsletter, WhatsApp, social media |
The order matters. If customers can't find you, collecting reviews helps little; if your site doesn't earn trust, advertising helps little.
Part 2 · Foundations What foundations should be in place before advertising?
Before spending a single lira on ads, three things need to be in place. Advertising without them is like filling a leaky bucket.
The foundations of digital marketing
A website
A site that clearly says what you do, where you are, how to reach you and gives price or booking information, and that opens properly on a phone. It doesn't need to be big; it needs to be accurate and up to date.
A complete Google Business Profile
The free way to appear on maps and in local search. Name, address, phone, opening hours, category and photos should be complete. Steps in how to set up a Google Business Profile.
Measurement
Google Search Console and Google Analytics should be set up, and enquiries from forms, phone and WhatsApp collected in one place. You can't tell whether a channel works if you don't measure it. For setup, see adding your site to Google Search Console.
Part 3 · Channels How do I promote my business online? Channels and their costs
You don't need to use every channel at once. The table below sums up the cost of the channels small businesses use most, how soon they bring results and who they suit.
| Channel | Cost | Results when? | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Free | Within weeks | Any business with a physical address or service area |
| SEO and blog content | Time or a service fee | Within months, lasting | Businesses whose customers search for their service on Google |
| Customer reviews | Free | Builds with every review | Everyone; especially local services |
| Google Ads | Pay per click | Immediately | Services searched for with urgent need (plumber, locksmith, repairs) |
| Instagram and Facebook ads | Pay per impression or click | Immediately | Visual products, newly opened businesses, events |
| Organic social media | Time | Slow | Strongly visual work (beauty, food, design) |
| Email newsletter | Low | Fast with existing customers | Products or services bought repeatedly |
| Low | Fast | Appointment- and order-heavy businesses |
To start, choose two or three channels and use them regularly. Touching all of them a little leads to results in none.
Part 4 · Local ads How do you advertise a local business?
A local business's customers are usually within a few kilometres. So the most important setting in local advertising is location: you show your ad only to people in the area you serve.
- Google search ads: When someone searches for "dentist near me" or "locksmith kadıköy", you appear at the top. Intent is high because the person is already searching.
- Instagram and Facebook ads: Targeted by location, age and interests. The person isn't searching at that moment, but gets to know you. Works well for openings, promotions and visual products.
- Start small: Try a small budget for a few weeks, see which ad brings enquiries, then increase.
- Send the ad to the right page: Take people who click to the page for the service in the ad, not the home page; phone, WhatsApp and the form should be easy to see there.
When the ad stops, so does its traffic. For lasting visibility, invest in local SEO alongside ads: Google Business Profile, reviews, and area and service pages on your site. Local SEO details are on the local SEO page, the basic concepts in what is SEO.
Part 5 · Trust Why do content and customer reviews matter so much?
Once a customer finds you, they decide. Two things influence that decision most: what other customers say, and how clearly you answer their questions.
- Reviews: The best moment to ask a happy customer for a review is when the job is done. Asking with a link or QR code makes it easy. Reply politely to every review, including negative ones.
- No fake reviews: Writing reviews yourself or buying them misleads customers and breaks platform rules.
- Content: Write down the ten questions customers ask you most and answer each one with a short article on your site. Over time these articles bring visitors from Google.
- Photos: Real photos of your premises, team and products build more trust than stock images.
The steps for a review collection link and showing reviews on your site are in collecting customer reviews.
Part 6 · Consent Consent rules for email, SMS and WhatsApp marketing
Announcing a promotion to existing customers is often cheaper than finding new ones. But sending commercial messages has rules.
Basic rules for message marketing
- State clearly on the subscription form what you'll send, and don't pre-tick the consent box.
- Include an unsubscribe link in every email.
- Write a few times a month, when you really have something useful.
- Don't send messages to bought lists or lists copied from elsewhere.
- Don't mix informational messages such as appointment reminders with promotional ones.
Part 7 · Measurement How do I measure whether digital marketing works?
The point of measuring isn't complicated reports but answering one question: which channel brings me customers? A few simple habits are enough.
- Ask new customers "How did you find us?" and note the answer.
- Collect form, phone and WhatsApp enquiries in one list.
- Check once a month which searches you appear in on Search Console.
- If you advertised, compare ad spend with the number of enquiries in that period.
- At the end of each month, consider dropping or growing one channel.
Part 8 · Plan A 90-day digital marketing plan for a small business
From foundations to a steady flow in 90 days
Month 1: foundations
Launch or update your website. Complete your Google Business Profile. Set up Search Console and Analytics. Write your name, address and phone the same way everywhere.
Month 2: trust
Ask recent customers for reviews and reply to every one. Add answers to the most frequent questions and real photos to your site. Create a separate page for each service.
Month 3: growth
Choose one channel and try it with a small budget: local search ads or location-targeted social ads. Start collecting newsletter subscribers with consent. At month end, see which channel brings enquiries and decide.
This plan isn't ambitious, it's sustainable. In digital marketing, results usually come not from one brilliant campaign but from small things done regularly for months.
Part 9 · Product Which of these does the Heyşirket company panel help with?
Heyşirket's aim is to digitalise your company from a single panel; the foundations of marketing are built with this panel's modules. We state clearly which package includes what.
| Job | In the panel | Package |
|---|---|---|
| Website | Ready-made themes, live customiser, form enquiries | Başlangıç (free) |
| Basic SEO and measurement | Titles and descriptions, sitemap, Search Console and Analytics connection, 28-day visitor summary | Başlangıç |
| Newsletter | Subscription form on the site, subscriber list and announcement emails with an unsubscribe link | Başlangıç |

Heyşirket has no automatic connection with Google Business Profile; you manage the profile on Google yourself. The panel checks the consistency of the name, address and phone on your site, and on the Premium package the team does local SEO work. Ad management isn't the panel's job either; you run your ads from Google's and Meta's own tools.
You'll find all the modules and where to start on the company digitalisation page, and a step-by-step roadmap in how to digitalise your company. Step-by-step help in the panel: Help › SEO centre.
Where should a small business start with digital marketing?
Start with the foundations: a website, a complete Google Business Profile and measurement tools such as Search Console and Analytics. Once they're in place, move on to collecting reviews and using one or two channels regularly.
How can I promote my business online for free?
Setting up a Google Business Profile, asking customers for reviews, answering frequent questions on your site and sharing real photos on social media are free. With Heyşirket's Başlangıç package you can also build the website for free.
What budget do I need for local business ads?
There's no fixed figure; the budget depends on your sector, area and competition. Starting with a small budget for a few weeks, measuring which ad brings enquiries and then increasing is the safest way.
Is social media or Google more important?
If people search for your service at the moment of need (plumbing, health, legal, repairs), Google and maps come first. If your product is visual or you're introducing something new, social media is strong. Most businesses use both.
Can I send promotional SMS or emails to my customers?
For commercial messages, Law No. 6563 requires prior consent from the recipient, and the recipient must always be able to opt out. Check the relevant regulation for consent records and exceptions.
Does Heyşirket manage my ads?
No. You run your ads from Google's and Meta's own tools. Heyşirket brings the website, SEO and measurement tools, reviews, the newsletter and enquiry tracking together in one company panel; on the Premium package the team does SEO and local SEO work.
