Local SEO checklist: 30 points to rank higher on Google Maps
Someone searching nearby sees a map and three businesses. Getting into that list isn't luck; it's the sum of a few dozen small details checked regularly.
In short
- Google ranks local results on three measures: relevance, distance and prominence; you can't change distance, but you can strengthen the other two.
- NAP consistency means your business name, address and phone are written exactly the same on your Google Business Profile, your website and in directories.
- The right primary category, a complete profile, regular genuine reviews and replies to them support your visibility on the map.
- On the website, a separate page per service, a clear address and hours, a map and local business schema are the foundation of local SEO.
- The Local SEO screen in Heyşirket's Professional plan shows name, address and phone consistency, local business schema, near-me searches and a checklist; it doesn't connect to Google Business Profile automatically.
“Pharmacy near me”, “vet in Çankaya”, “tyre shop open now”. For these searches Google first shows a map and three businesses. Most customers call one of those three or ask for directions. If you're not in that list, how nice your website is often doesn't matter.
This article is a local SEO checklist. We explain how to open and verify a Google Business Profile in a separate article: how to set up a Google Business Profile. Here we assume your profile is live and list, point by point, what to check on your profile, your website and elsewhere to rank higher on Google Maps.
Part 1 · Basics How does Google rank local results?
Google explains that it looks at three main measures in local ranking. Every item on the checklist strengthens one of them.
| Measure | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well the profile and site match the search | Right category, service list, clear service pages |
| Distance | How far the searcher or the searched place is from you | Correct address and map pin; the rest is out of your hands |
| Prominence | How well known and trusted the business is | Reviews, directory listings, links, the site's overall SEO |
Part 2 · NAP What is NAP consistency and why does it matter so much?
NAP stands for name, address, phone. NAP consistency means these three are written exactly the same on your Google Business Profile, your website, your social media accounts and directory listings. The more Google sees the same details in different sources, the more it trusts that your business is real and accurate.
| Detail | Inconsistent example | Consistent version |
|---|---|---|
| Name | “Example Dental” on the profile, “Example Oral and Dental Health Clinic” on the site | The same trading name everywhere |
| Address | “Atatürk Cad. No:5” and “Atatürk Caddesi 5/A” | One spelling, including flat and floor |
| Phone | Landline on the profile, mobile on the site | The same main number, in the same format |
Part 3 · Profile Google Business Profile checklist
Even with a live, verified profile, most businesses leave a few fields incomplete. Check these items once a month.
Profile (10 points)
- The profile is verified and I own it.
- The business name is the real name on my sign; I didn't add a city or keyword.
- The primary category is the narrowest one describing my main service.
- Additional categories cover only services I really offer.
- The address and map pin are correct; my service area is set correctly.
- Opening hours and holiday hours are current.
- The website field contains my own site's address.
- The services or products list is filled in with descriptions.
- Exterior, interior and team photos are current.
- I've answered common questions and customer questions.
Part 4 · Reviews Reviews: the language of trust on Google Maps
Reviews affect both prominence and the searcher's decision. Regularity matters as much as the count: a few reviews every month look more natural than ten in one go once a year. We cover practical ways to ask for reviews in collecting customer reviews and reply examples in replies to customer reviews.
Reviews (5 points)
- I send the review link to every satisfied customer.
- I reply briefly and personally to every review, positive or negative.
- I don't offer discounts or gifts in return for reviews.
- I don't have fake reviews written, and I don't leave reviews for competitors.
- I read complaints in reviews to improve how I work.
Part 5 · Website Local SEO on the website
Google follows the website link on your profile and compares the information on your site with the profile. In local searches, the site is one of the strongest sources of relevance.
Website (10 points)
- Name, address and phone are written in the site footer and contact page exactly as on the profile.
- The phone number can be called with one tap on a phone.
- The contact page has a map and directions.
- Each service has its own page, with the service and city in its title.
- If I have several branches, each has its own page and details.
- The site has local business (LocalBusiness) schema, matching the profile.
- Opening hours are current on the site too.
- The site loads quickly on phones.
- The neighbourhoods and districts I serve appear naturally on the pages.
- My site is connected to Search Console and I track local searches.
To find which district and service combinations are searched, try the method in keyword research with “near me” and district names. Don't copy the same content into dozens of pages changing only the city name; Google treats such doorway pages as spam.
Part 6 · External sources Directories, links and local content
External sources (5 points)
- I'm listed with correct details in professional chamber, industry association and municipal directories.
- I'm also listed on Apple Maps, Bing Maps and Yandex Maps with the same details.
- Address, phone and website are correct on my Instagram and Facebook profiles.
- I appear naturally on local news sites or event pages.
- My site has at least one post with information specific to my area.
We explain how links are earned and which ones are risky in what is a backlink.
Part 7 · Mistakes 6 common local SEO mistakes
- Adding keywords to the business name: Names like “Example Dental Clinic Kadıköy Implants” break Google's guidelines; the profile can be suspended.
- Using a virtual office or PO box address: If customers can't actually visit you, hide the address and set a service area instead.
- Opening two profiles for one business: Duplicate profiles split reviews and signals. Ask Google to remove or merge the extra profile.
- Not keeping opening hours current: Not saying you're closed on public holidays means customers turned away at the door, and negative reviews.
- Never replying to reviews: An unanswered negative review makes new customers think the business doesn't care.
- Not linking the site to the profile: If the website field on the profile is empty or points to an old address, the site's relevance contribution is lost.
Part 8 · Product Checking local SEO in the company panel
In the Heyşirket company panel, you enter your business name, address, phone, opening hours, map link and location once on the İşletme profili (Business profile) screen. The site uses these on its pages and adds local business schema automatically once the profile is filled in. The SEO › Yerel SEO (Local SEO) screen in the Professional plan shows these sections:
- Consistency: Name, address and phone are compared across three sources: the business profile in the panel, the site's live page and the site's structured data. Rows are marked as fine, different or missing. Abbreviations (“Cad.”, “Caddesi”) and phone formats are normalised for the comparison.
- Local business schema: Missing fields in the schema are listed; you can view and copy the suggested schema. The schema is built only from details filled in on the profile; no ratings or reviews are invented.
- Hours and map: Whether opening hours and the map location have been entered.
- Searches near you: Your impressions, clicks and position for “near me” and city or district searches. This data comes from your Search Console connection.
- Google Business Profile checklist: Items we can check with our own data are ticked automatically; items such as verification, primary category, photos, review replies and the website address on the profile are reminders for you to check on your profile.
The Local SEO screen is in the Professional plan. In the Premium plan, our team runs local SEO with you: your Google Business Profile, map and reviews routine. Details on the Local SEO and SEO service pages. Step-by-step in the panel: Help › Business profile.
How do you do local SEO?
Complete and verify your Google Business Profile, write your name, address and phone the same everywhere, collect and reply to genuine reviews regularly, use a separate page per service and local business schema on your site, and get listed in trustworthy local directories.
How do you rank higher on Google Maps?
Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and prominence. The right category, a complete profile, consistent details, regular reviews and a strong website raise relevance and prominence. Ranking can't be bought, and no one can guarantee a specific position.
What is NAP consistency?
NAP stands for name, address and phone. NAP consistency means these three are written exactly the same on your Google Business Profile, website, social media and directories.
Does adding a city or keyword to my business name help?
Don't add it unless it's part of your real trading name. Google wants the business name to match the real-world name; keywords added to the name break its guidelines and can lead to the profile being suspended.
Can you do local SEO without a website?
You can appear on the map with only a Google Business Profile, but a site strengthens relevance, confirms the details on your profile and gives you another chance to rank for service searches.
