What should a lawyer's website look like? A law firm site that respects the advertising ban
For lawyers in Türkiye, a website is not an advertising tool but an information page, closer to a directory entry. This article covers what a site may contain, what is prohibited and how to build one.
In short
- A lawyer's website should be informative: name, title, photo, office address, contact details, bar registration details, university, foreign languages and the office's areas of practice may be listed.
- Under the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB) Advertising Ban Regulation, a site may not show references or client information, areas of practice may not suggest specialist expertise, and online advertising is not allowed.
- The same regulation also bans using guiding keywords, subdomains and page addresses aimed at ranking high in search engines to win work.
- In Heyşirket, a law firm site with legal themes, team profiles, articles and a contact form is built for free on the Starter plan.
- Pre-accounting work such as client accounts, per-case expense advances and invoicing is in Professional and above; e-SMM (electronic self-employment receipt) is not offered yet.
When a prospective client hears a lawyer's name, the first thing they do is search online. The office address, phone number, who works there and which areas the office handles should all be there. A law firm website answers these questions simply and accurately.
Law has a second side to it: the advertising ban. The Turkish Attorneys' Act and the rules of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB) prohibit lawyers from any attempt that could count as advertising to win work. A 2024 amendment drew the lines for websites even more clearly. Below we first cover what a law firm site should contain, then what it shouldn't, and finally how to build one in Heyşirket.
Part 1 · Purpose What is a lawyer's website for?
A lawyer's site is not there to promote but to be found and recognised. It makes sure someone who has already heard of you reaches the right office and the right phone number. Think of it as the online version of your business card and office sign, with room for what doesn't fit there: the lawyers on the team, the office's areas of practice, directions and a contact form.
That's why a good lawyer's site is orderly rather than flashy. A visitor should find who, where and how to reach you within three clicks. For a law firm website, success isn't "how many people came" but "did the people who came find accurate information".
Part 2 · Pages Which pages should a law firm website have?
| Page | What goes on it | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Office name, short introduction, contact details | A plain description instead of slogans and claims |
| About the office | Year founded, partnership structure, working principles | No successes or won cases |
| Lawyers | Name, title, photo, bar and registration number, education, languages | Titles exactly as on the certificate |
| Areas of practice | Which areas the office takes work in | No impression of specialist expertise |
| Articles | Articles with general legal information | No specific cases, clients or outcomes |
| Contact | Address, phone, email, map, opening hours | The form doesn't ask for case details |
| KVKK privacy notice and cookie policy | Which data the form collects and why (KVKK is Türkiye's data protection law) | Linked in the footer |
The list looks short, but it's enough. Missing pages are rarely the problem on a law firm site; the problem is usually sentences that say too much. We cover the general structure of a business site separately in what a corporate website should look like.
Part 3 · Rules What does the lawyer advertising ban keep off your website?
The core principle: you may inform, but you may not promote yourself to ask for work. With the 2024 amendment, the TBB Advertising Ban Regulation listed the information a website may carry and explicitly banned certain practices. These are the situations that come up most often:
| Don't write | Why | Instead |
|---|---|---|
| "Istanbul's best divorce lawyer", "leader in the field" | Claim of superiority over colleagues | List the office's areas of practice neutrally |
| "Specialist lawyer", "criminal law expert" | Areas of practice may not suggest expertise | "Areas of practice: criminal law, employment law" |
| References, client logos, companies advised | The regulation bans sections sharing client information | Don't create this section at all |
| "Cases we've won", success rates | Winning work through cases and outcomes | Articles with general legal information |
| Client reviews, rating badges | Testimonials used for promotion | Don't use a reviews section |
| "Free first consultation", "affordable fees", campaigns | Attracting work through incentives and price | A neutral prompt such as "Call to arrange a meeting" |
Part 4 · Content How do you write a lawyer profile and areas of practice?
The lawyer profile is the most-read page on the site. The regulation lists what may appear on it: name, title, photo, office address, contact details, registration details, the date you started practising, your university and foreign languages. If you hold an academic title, add it exactly as on the certificate.
- Identity: Av. (Attorney) First Last, plus any academic title.
- Bar and registration: Your bar association and registration number.
- Education: Your law faculty, plus any master's or doctorate.
- Languages: The foreign languages you can hold meetings in.
- Contact: Your direct phone or business email address.
On the areas of practice page, two or three neutral sentences per area are enough: what kind of work the area involves and how the process generally runs. Avoid experience and outcome claims like "we have handled hundreds of files in this area". The aim is to explain the subject to the visitor, not to put yourself forward.
Part 5 · Contact Contact form and personal data
Prospective clients usually get in touch by phone or form. Keep the form short: name, phone, email and a short message. Don't ask for case details, information about the other party or documents; those are discussed at the first meeting, in a secure setting. Put a link to the KVKK privacy notice under the form.
Your email address builds trust too. Use an address on the office's domain, e.g. info@officename.com, rather than a personal mailbox. In Heyşirket, a mailbox on your own domain comes with one address on the free Starter plan; details on the business email page. For privacy texts, see the KVKK-compliant website page.
Part 6 · Setup How do you build a lawyer's website in Heyşirket?
In Heyşirket every company has one company panel: website, email and pre-accounting live in the same place. There are two themes for law firms: Mizan, in navy and bronze with lawyer profiles and an initial consultation form, and Temsil, a plainer burgundy theme for independent lawyers and mediators.
Step by step: a law firm site
Open your company panel
Enter your office's name on the start for free page; your site is ready at name.heysirket.com. You can connect your own domain on the Starter plan too.
Choose a legal theme
Pick Mizan or Temsil in the Design section and set your logo and colours in the live customiser.
Add lawyer profiles
With Team profiles under Features, open a separate page for each lawyer with name, title, photo, education and contact details. Although one field in the panel is called specialty, enter the area of practice there.
Areas of practice and articles
Open a short page for each area of practice and publish general information articles in the blog. Sample texts come marked "ÖRNEK" (sample); replace all of them with your own before going live.
Contact and legal pages
Add a form to the contact page and fill in Settings › General › Privacy so the office details in the KVKK notice and cookie policy fill in automatically. Incoming messages land on the Requests screen.
Step-by-step guide in the panel: Help › Adding pages and posts. We've gathered what comes ready for this sector on the Heyşirket for law firms page.
Part 7 · Running the office After the site: clients, case files and collections
The site is only one part of the office's digital setup. Pre-accounting is included in Professional and above with no separate subscription. When you choose lawyer as your profession, screens say Client (Müvekkil) instead of "customer", and the service list comes with ready items such as attorney's fee, hourly consultancy, case management and contract drafting.
- Case files and expense advances: On the client's card you open a case file, take an advance, add expenses and refund the remainder. You send the client an expense statement as a PDF by email. Advances aren't counted as income; they stay out of invoice, expense and VAT reports.
- Consultancy packages: You can sell hourly consultancy packages and draw them down with each use.
- Invoicing and collections: Law partnerships and companies can issue e-Fatura and e-Arşiv invoices (Türkiye's electronic invoice types) and track collections in the same place.
Lawyer website checklist
- Name, title, bar, registration, education and languages are written for each lawyer exactly as documented.
- Areas of practice are described neutrally; no "specialist", "best" or "leader".
- No references, client list, reviews or ratings section.
- No won cases, success rates or fee information.
- Page titles state the office name and the page's topic; no keyword stuffing.
- The contact form is short, doesn't ask for case details and links to the KVKK notice.
- An email address on the office's domain is in use.
- Before publishing, the texts were read once more against the bar's current rules.
Are lawyers in Türkiye allowed to have a website?
Yes. Lawyers and law partnerships may have a website. It may contain informative content such as name, title, photo, office address, contact and registration details, university, foreign languages and the office's areas of practice; advertising aimed at winning work is not allowed.
Can I list areas of practice on a lawyer's website?
Yes, the areas the office works in may be listed. But the wording must not suggest specialist expertise. Instead of "criminal law expert", use something neutral like "Areas of practice: criminal law".
Can I show client reviews or references on the site?
No. The TBB Advertising Ban Regulation doesn't allow sections on a website that share information about references or clients. Reviews and rating badges should also be avoided, since they can count as promotion.
Can I run Google ads for a lawyer's site?
No. The regulation bans placing online ads and using guiding keywords aimed at ranking high in search engines to win work. It's enough for the site to work properly with accurate titles.
